Trend Report: Oscar Beauty 2013

An Oscar look is only as good as the hair and makeup.  The dress can be spot on, but if you're hair and makeup aren't perfect it can throw off the entire look!  The actresses pulled out all of the stops last night to show off how beautiful they really are!  Here are some hair and makeup trends the average girl can take away from the Oscars.

Retro Waves- Reese Witherspoon

You already know from my fashion report that I think Reese can do no wrong, and her hair has always been one of my favorite features of hers!  These retro Veronica Lake like waves prove how much of a movie star she really is.

The Undone-Done Updo- Jennifer Garner

I have been in love with Jennifer Garner since her Alias Days and I love how so many of her updos are soft and look almost undone.  Last night was no exception, while quite a few celebrities rocked the "undone done updo", I think Jennifer looked the best!

Movie Star Red Lip- Jessica Chastain

Is there anything more Hollywood than a bold red lip? No one rocked a better red lip at this years' Oscar than Jessica Chastain.  The red hair and red lips give her an amazing Jessica Rabbit like feel.

Trend Report: Oscar 2013 Fashion

From the moment that Seth McFarlane was announced to host the Oscars I was excited!  I love to watch for the fashion of course, but I was very excited to watch it for the comedy this year as well!

This year was the year I feel of the safe Oscar fashion.  There were no dresses where I yelled at my screen to shut it off, but I wasn't blown away by a lot of the dresses either.  I can't wait to see what Joan Rivers has to say about some of these gals tonight!

Here are some of the trends that I feel us non celebrity gals can rock in our every day or special occasion wardrobes.

The Back Chain- Jennifer Lawrence

Now I didn't LOVE JLaw's dress.  Don't get me wrong I think she looked stunning, but you're the IT girl and you're so young, I just thought the dress was a bit mature for her.  A style feature of hers I did like however- the back chain!  I know these were seen on the red carpet a few years ago, but I feel like now we are going to see them everywhere and I can't wait to wear one with a special occasion dress!

The best way to wear a back chain is with a long, single strand, delicate chain that you probably already own!

White Peplum- Charlize Theron

Charlize was definitely one of my best dressed nominees.  I think she looked flawless and totally elegant.  I already posted in my Grammy's fashion report how I think we should all rock some non-bridal white in our lives, and Charlize takes that thought to another level!  In my last post I included a lot of soft and earthy white dresses, but I love this structured white peplum.

Blue and Black- Reese Witherspoon

Reese just does no wrong in my eyes and last night was no exception.  When I was younger one of the fashion rules was never mix blue and black.  They were too similar, they clashed, whatever else they said.  That rule has been thrown out for a while and Reese proves it even more in this beautiful Louis Vuitton number.

Sick Girl Skin Care Tips

This past week was my winter break.  I was supposed to spend a day at the spa, and many a nights out with my girls.  In reality, I got a few nights out with my girls, before the flu struck.  Today is day 5 of the flu and while I am beginning to feel a bit better, the flu has definitely taken it's toll not only on my health but on my skin as well.
Here are some skin care tips that I've been using this week to make sure my skin doesn't feel as horrible as I do!

♥ Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize- The flu can be very dehydrating for your body and this includes your skin.  While during a normal day you may only moisturize your face in the morning and evening, moisturize 3-4 times a day.

♥ Vaseline will be your best friend! Use it on your lips and especially around your nose if you've been wiping or blowing a lot.

♥ Drink tons of water.  This is not only good for your immune system but for your skin as well.

♥ I've been taking a lot more baths and showers since I've gotten sick so I have to lather up my body with more moisturizer as well.  Moisturize as soon as you get out of the shower for optimal results.

♥ I've been getting very cold during the evening due to fever, so I used this as an excuse to throw some extra lotion on my feet and sleep in soft socks.

♥ Try to sleep propped up (just as if you were out drinking and partying) so all of the fluid in your body doesn't end up traveling up to your face resulting in puffiness.

♥ Most importantly, just relax and take it easy!  I didn't put makeup tips in this post, because if you have the flu you need to stay home and relax and let it run its course!

Spa Night Essentials

One night a week I like to take some extra time in the shower to really pamper myself and give myself some treatments.  I find that I feel more relaxed and definitely a little glowy afterwards.  Here are the pampering products that I have been reaching for the most lately.

From L to R, front to back:

*Lush Big Shampoo- This shampoo has quickly become my favorite hair product.  I find that the salt in the shampoo helps to give a great scalp massage and it also helps get out all of my deep conditioning treatment.

*The Body Shop Vitamin E Sink In Moisture Mask- I've had this mask for quite a while and I just love it.  It really provides great moisture to my skin and a little bit goes a long way so you really get your money's worth.

*Lush Sweet Lips Lip Scrub- Even though I use this lip scrub almost daily, it is definitely a pampering treat.  I've never tried any of the other scents, but this one is just perfection!

*Bath and Body Works/White Barn candle in Marshmallow Fireside- When it comes to a spa night I need a warm or sweet scent.  This candle provides the perfect aroma for a winter spa night.

Back Row:

*Homemade Vanilla Body Scrub- I love this pinterest body scrub that my best friend made me for my birthday.  To really get the max results from a scrub, exfoliate your skin dry.  I like to hop in the shower and apply this scrub from head to toe, massaging it into my skin gently in circular motions.  Then turn on the water and wash it all off.  Your skin is SO smooth!

*Trader Joe's Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil- I usually take a small amount of this, maybe half a teaspoon, rub it into my hands and apply to the ends of my hair.  I then throw my hair into a braid or bun and work out before my shower.  I find that the heat from my workout really helps the oil penetrate my hair.  If you're not in the mood to workout, throw this in your hair and put on a shower cap with a warm towel on top for about 20 minutes prior to washing it out.
****Tip- I have also been using this to shave my legs lately and it's amazing!

*Scent Bar Cabana Lotion- This lotion from Target is just the most heavenly smelling lotion ever.  It smells like vanilla and coconut and goes on beautifully.  This really transports me away from my bathroom!

These are just a few items that really make me feel pampered.  What are your spa night essentials?

Tip Thursday: Glove it Up

I love curling wands.  I don't think I've used a regular curling iron in quite a few months.  There are some irons where it's like second nature to me, but there are some where I still need to use a heat proof glove.  I went to Sally's the other day to buy one and it was around $5.  I tried using just a regular dollar store glove and it worked just fine!  I wouldn't recommend literally holding the wand with this on, but if you are just holding the ends of your hair to the wand for 15-30 seconds, than you're set!

Grammy's 2013 Trend Report: Fashion Edition

I absolutely love awards shows.  I mainly watch a lot of them for the fashion, but last night's Grammy's was an exception.  I watched the entire show and was highly entertained by all of it!

I was also obsessed with a lot of the dresses.  I think so many of the female artists looked absolutely stunning.  Grammy fashion is usually a bit more funky than a lot of the other award shows, but last night's event was a much classier Grammy show.

Here are some of my favorite looks from the night and how these trends can be utilized into your daily wardrobe or your special occasion wear.  These are not replica outfits, but trends that can be taken from the fashion of the Grammy and used in your own wardrobe.

Katy Perry

Ok seriously, how stunning did Katy Perry looks last night? I don't think there was a guy in the theater last night who wasn't obsessed with Katy's beautiful body in this mint green number.

The trend that I want to rock from Katy's look is mint green dresses.  I love mint clothing, but I only own tops or bottoms- not an entire dress.  Katy's look has inspired me to go fully mint and rock one of these beautiful mint dresses below.

Beyonce

I know Joan Rivers might tear Beyonce apart on tonight's Fashion Police, but I actually really liked her look.  I think it was very appropriate based on the fact that the Grammy's requested more subdued looks and I think she looked very classy.

The trend I like from B's ensemble is black and white color blocking.  Color blocking I thought was possibly on it's way out, but B brought it back in stark black and white.  Rock one of those black and white color block tops below with black skinnies or a black pencil skirt for a classic look.

Taylor Swift

Say what you want about T-Swizzle, but I think she is adorable and always looks classy and age appropriate.  This beautiful white dress may be my favorite look of hers yet.  She looked fresh and fun and very etheral but still glamorous.

I know people are saying that white dresses are going to be the new LBD's, and after seeing TSwift look so classic and un-bridal, I may be giving the white dress a spin myself.

Rihanna

RiRi's personal life aside, she is an amazing and beautiful artist.  I love when she looks non-edgy and dresses like the Rihanna she was when she first hit the scene.  This red dress was stunning and the mesh inserts make it sexy with out being in your face.

The trend from this I'd like to rock is actually red mesh.  Red mesh can sound very trashy and lingerie like, but take a peek at these pieces below and red mesh can be subtly sexy and not trashy at all.
