How to Carry On: Beauty Edition

As this is being published I am on my way to South Carolina for a few days of R & R at the beach.  I'm only going from Sunday-Wednesday so I didn't want to pay the ridiculous prices to check luggage and decided to carry on only.  I knew I wouldn't have a problem with the clothes, but the liquids aspect of it may be tricky.  Here's what I carried on for my liquids and some tips and tricks on squeezing it all in:

What I packed top to bottom, left to right:

Top Row:
*Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo- Not technically a liquid, but all aerosols have to be included in the 3 oz or less liquid rule.

*Tresemme Tres Clean Gel- I'm not planning on blow drying my hair or anything so a bit of gel scrunched in and some air drying should suffice.

*John Frieda Root Awakening- I wash my hair as little as possible, so these sample sizes which I got in the mail are perfect.  This is why you should always save your samples!

Middle Row:
*Black and White Pill Case- This pill case contains my Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation.  I don't need that whole jar, and let's face it that jar would take up my entire liquids bag, so I scooped a bit into this pill jar.

*Physicians Formula Conceal Rx- This is a perfect underye concealer and for redness around the nose.

*Benefit Bad Gal Mascara- I held onto this sample size even though I don't love the mascara.  It's the perfect size for travel.

*Smashbox Photo Finish Primer- I think this was one of my sample choices with a Sephora order.  I haven't tried it before, so I hope I don't have an adverse reaction.

*RMS Concealer Sample- Tammy sent me this and I've used it a few times and loved it.  This sample size is perfect for any blemishes and is also a better shade for my tan skin.

*Face Shop High Beam Dupe Sample

*ELF Lipgloss- The one lipgloss I'm bringing.  Perfect for day looks and if I go out at night.

*SKIN Transformer BB Cream- This is what I'll slather on my face when I go to the beach so I can get coverage and skin care benefits.  I got this sample size in my Sephora Sun Safety Kit this year.

Bottom Row:

*Natural Republic SPF 50 Sample

*Ole Henriksen 55 SPF- I also got this in my Sun Safety Kit and plan on using this at the beach specifically.

*Boscia Self Defense Vital Antioxidant Moisturizer with SPF- My day cream with a healthy dose of SPF.  Also from the Sephora kit.

*Kate Spade Swirl Perfume Sample- I have SO many of these little sample perfume vials.  I can't wait to get rid of some of them on all of these little trips I have coming up.

*Sheaterra White Chocolate Body Cream- OMG does this stuff smell amazing! I like to save these smaller sizes products to use for traveling or to keep in my purse.

*Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser

*Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturizer- This moisturizer is a bit heavy for the summer, but considering I'll be spending a lot of time in the sun, I want a heavier moisturizer.

When I first started looking at all of the liquids I needed to pack I automatically flipped, but as you can see I fit a lot in there.  Before I leave I'll also be throwing my SPF lip balm in the bag.

Here are items that MUST be included in your liquids bag:

-Any liquid makeup (including liquid liner and cream eyeshadow)
-Any liquid skincare or body care products
-Any aerosol products
-Toothpaste
-Gel or roll on deodorants
-Chapsticks or lip balms

Here are items that DO NOT have to be included in your liquids bag:

-Pencil eyeliners
-Face wipes or body wipes
-Regular stick deodorants

What are your tips for traveling with makeup?  I'm always looking for ways to stay better organized when traveling!

Tip Thursday: Wet Hair= Safe Hair

With summer here, a lot of people have been talking about sunscreen.  Sunscreen is of course very important, but an area that a lot of people seem to forget about in the summer is their hair.  Hair takes just a bad of a beating during the summer as your skin does.

Image from google.com

One of my easiest (and cheapest!) hair protection tips for summer is to wet your hair prior to going to the pool or beach.  The chlorine in the pool or salt in the sea water is super bad for your hair.  By wetting your hair in the shower or even with a bottle of water, you are wetting your hair with "safe" water, so it won't be able to absorb as much as the "bad" water.  Plus, how chic does a high wet bun look during these hot summer months?

What's one of your favorite summer hair care tips??

Summer Bucket List

A few weekends ago one of my girlfriends and I put together our Summer Bucket List.  We decided to do one together because we have a lot of the same plans in mind.  Let's see how many of these babies we can cross of our list before the end of summer!

1.  Visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa)

We are both life long New Yorkers and have never been to this beautiful modern art mecca.

2.  Visit the Metropolitan Museum (Met)

I have been to the Met countless times (it's literally one of my favorite places in New York City), but my friend Serafina has never been.  If you visit NYC you MUST visit the Met.  It's not just paintings trust me!

3.  Visit a rooftop bar

Rooftop bars are THE summer location in New York.  Neither of us have ever been to one- so it's about time!

4.  Visit the Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens is one of those rare beautiful nature reserves in the middle of New York.  The one we want to visit is in the Bronx and it's supposed to be stunning.  Definitely will need to take my allergy pills that day though!

5.  Make s'mores

I have never in my life made a s'more.  I know, I've been deprived.

6.  Find the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park

I've been in Central park plenty of times, but never really explored the inner paths of the park.  My friend Serafina is obsessed with Alice in Wonderland so we MUST find this beautiful area of the park this summer.

7.  Have gelato

I mean come on, gelato just sounds so much fancier than ice cream!

8.  Attend an outdoor movie

In New York City there's an outdoor movie somewhere pretty much every week.  I've wanted to go to an outdoor movie since I've seen The Wedding Planner.

9.  Go thrifting

The thrifting in NYC is AH-MAZING! It's time to make a day and just go thrift store hopping.

10.  Be a tourist for a day

Again, both of us have been lifelong New Yorkers, but there's so much we haven't done because they are considered "tourist" things.  I'm dying to go to the top of the Rock, visit Ellis Island, take a boat tour, a double decker bus tour.  It's time to take advantage of the amazing city I have in my backyard!

What's on your Summer 2013 Bucket List?

Fitspiration: The Real Skinny Book Review

I love heading to my local library to check out the newest health, diet and fitness books.  It's a great way to look into a lot of different nutrition plans and fitness routines without having to pay for the book.
A few weeks I picked up, The Real Skinny: 101 Fat Habits & Slim Solutions.

I began reading this book as soon as I got home from the library and I really enjoyed it.  I really liked the formatting of this book.  It was written by stating 101 of the most popular "excuses" against losing weight.  Things like: I'm big boned, Healthy cooking doesn't taste as good, I'm too busy.  After the excuses, the book provides simple (albeit common sense) tips on how to fight those excuses.

Some of the excuses and tips that I took notes on were:

* I can't live without my diet coke
*I'm always hungry
*Happy Hour is my favorite hour

At the end of the book a nutrition plan was included, along with some really great recipes.  The nutrition plan consists of 1,600 calories a day and:

-6 servings of grains (mainly whole grains)
-2 servings of fruit
- at least 4 servings of vegetables
- 2 servings of nonfat or low-fat dairy
- 7 servings of lean protein
-5 servings of healthy fats

A lot of the information in the book was common sense or commonly known if you read any fitness magazines or fitblogs regularly, but it is a good book to have on your bookshelf when you need inspiration.  I can't tell you how many times I've used at least 5-6 of the excuses in the book.  If I never use one of those excuses, I could just flip to that page and get the advice on how to break that excuse.

Any diet books you guys can recommend that are written in more of a "quick tip" format?  I really enjoy those!

Summer Essentials: Beauty Edition

As summer has officially begun, I thought it was time to post my personal beauty essentials for summer.

*Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion

This sunscreen is marketed for the face, but I use it on my body.  I have the tendency to get very sweaty in the summer and sunscreens can frequently make my chest breakout.  This facial sunscreen has helped minimize those breakouts.

*Revlon Color Stay Whipped Crème Makeup in Warm Golden

Some people may think this foundation is a bit too heavy for the summer, but I apply this in a super light layer with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and it applies beautifully.  This color is perfect to warm up my skin tone in these tanner months.

*Boscia Self-Defense Vital Antioxidant Moisture SPF 30

I received this in my Sephora Sun Kit and I've really enjoyed it.  It provides moisture and SPF and provides a great base for makeup.

*Mac Mineralize Skinfinish in Blonde

This is my favorite blush to use on summer nights.  It looks beautiful with a tan and it's a blush and highlighter in one.

*Softlips Lip Protectant SPF 20

A lot of people tend to forget their lips when they apply SPF and this softlips chap stick provides SPF 20 protection and a non-glossy surface so it won't further attract sun.

*Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer

Ok, before I discuss how beautiful this bronzer is, let me discuss the smell.  How did I love so long without not using a chocolate scented bronzer? It smells heavenly!  Also, the color is just beyond beautiful.  Brown without being ruddy.  Too dark for my face normally, but with a slight tan it looks beautiful.

*Essence Stay All Day Long Lasting Eyeshadow in Coppy Right

I don't like wearing a lot of eye makeup day to day in the summer and this cream shadow provides a beautiful sparkly bronze glow on my eyes.  It also helps bring out the green in my eyes.  With a primer, this baby can last all day.

*Laura Geller Balance and Brighten Regular

When I had to the beach, this is what I use as my foundation.  It's super light and applies beautifully.  If I'm going for a fuller face look, I use this on top of my Revlon foundation.

*Nature Republic By Flower Oil Control Mist

I've only had this for a couple of weeks, but wow is it great!  I apply 2-3 spritzes to my face after my moisturizer, but before my primer.  It has really cut down on my greasy face without giving my face a matte appearance.  I won't even touch this in the winter when my skin is Sahara dry, but right now it's amazing!!

Tip Thursday: Cool Eyes

One of the biggest beauty battles I continue to face is puffiness in the eye area.  Especially when I wake up on a particularly bad allergy day.

I've found that by putting my morning eye cream (currently using a gel) in the fridge and applying the product cold has helped minimize some of the puffiness.  Cold constricts the blood cells and helps reduce puffiness and some of the dark circles.

Do you put any of your skin care products in the fridge?

Recent Empties

Normally I like to wait up until I have TONS of empties to do one of these posts, but this weekend I just went bananas and had to clean out my room and this included the bag of trash that I've been saving in a pretty shopping bag under my desk.  Here we go!

EMPTIES HITS

*Just The Basics Moisturizing Shave Cream- I bought this at Walgreens I believe and for how cheap it was, it actually turned out to be a nice shaving cream.  I tend to get dry legs when I shave too frequently, and that never happened with this.  I don't know if I will repurchase, because I'm addicted to the current shave cream I've been using, but if I'm in a bind I will DEFINITELY repurchase.

*Arbonne Ginger Citrus Body Scrub- I really enjoyed this scrub and found it very effective at scrubbing off the dead skin or any flakies.  What really made this product stand out for me though was the scent.  It smells super fresh and clean.  However, I will not be repurchasing it, because I've started using homemade body scrubs which are just as effective.

*Lush Big Shampoo- This shampoo is LOVE.  I've already repurchased my second bottle and it's amazing. The best clarifying shampoo I have ever used.

*Melt Massage Bar- I bought this in Provincetown like 2 summers ago and I only began using it every day over the winter.  This thing was heaven.  The scent was called "Lickin' the Beaters"  and if I could get this scent on everything, I would.  I will definitely be repurchasing this summer when I go back to P-town.

*Dr. Grosse Alpha Beta Glow Pad-  This is my ultimate summer beauty product.  It provides the most beautiful natural tan on the face.  I love this product because so many tanners are for use on the body only and this works beautifully on the face without any breakouts!

EMPTIES MISSES

*Real Nature Mask Lemon- I got this during my shoppingpalooza with Tammy and Vanessa.  I usually like sheet masks, but this one left my skin looking even more drab than it did before and I didn't like what it did to the texture of my skin.

*Nature Republic Snail Therapy Hydragel Eye Patch- After a night out I usually have some serious baggage under my eyes.  I really had high hopes for these helping in that area.  Other than looking funny, it didn't do anything to my under eye baggage.

What products have you gone through lately?

Shopaholic Tag!

I love shopping.  However, I am not the kind of gal who can shop anytime.  I really have to be in the mood to shop.  I'm very particular about what is worth trying on in the store and what I can wait to try on at home and just return.  When I saw the Shopaholic Tag going around Youtube, I knew it was a tag that I just had to do!

1.  Would you consider yourself a shopaholic?

Actually, no I wouldn't consider myself a shopaholic.  If I'm on a roll, I can rack up quite a few purchases, but the mood to shop AND actually buy doesn't strike me all that often.

2.  What would you classify your style as?

I've been trying to figure that out for quite a while.  I don't think my style has a definition.  I guess the easiest way to describe it is classic and casual.

3.  What store can you into with out at least buying one thing?

Probably Marshalls or TJ Maxx.  It's very rare that I walk out of those stores empty handed, and if I do it's usually just because the lines are way too long and I don't feel like waiting in them.

4.  Where do you find your best deals?

Definitely score my best deals at Marshalls or Tj Maxx.  You have to be in the mood to dig, but ifyou are you can usually score some great finds.

5.  What designer are you willing to splurge on?

I don't have many designer items, but the brands I usually splurge on (but splurge at the outlets) are Coach and Kate Spade.  It's easy for me to spend money in those stores.

6.  What is your go to shopping outfit?

When I know I'm really going to have to try things on will be shopping for a while, I usually wear something comfy like leggings, a nude bra, loose shirt and easy to slip off shoes.

7.  What is your guilty pleasure?

I always have a habit of buying things placed by the register.  I love those little products they have while waiting inline.  Total guilty pleasure.

8.  One Simple clothing piece you can't live without?

Skinny jeans.  Most of my outfits revolve around skinnies.

9.  One Trend I hope Never Goes Out Of Style

Skinnies.  I love skinny jeans!  I'm too short for relaxed cuts or flares or anything, so skinny jeans are my jean of choice.

10.  What is one trend you loved that passed way too quickly?

Hmmm...I don't know if wedge sneakers are "out" because its summer or if they're are officially out, but I loved the looks of those.  So sleek and badass.

11.  Who is your style icon?

Is there anyone other than Carrie Bradshaw?

I'd love to see if any of my gals do this tag! Please comment below if you do.

Quick Tip: Prevent Sweating at Night

As hot temperatures and humidity begin to creep up on me in the suburbs of NYC,  I've began doing more reading and research on hot weather makeup and skincare tips.  One of the best tips I've read, and something I've been been doing for years not knowing the benefits, is to apply your deodorant/antiperspirant at night!

Deodorant needs time to be absorbed to the body and doesn't work as effectively if you're already sweating (more likely to happen in the morning).  If you're not a sweaty or stinky gal, the application of deodorant at night should be more than enough to last you the next day.  If it's super hot or you know you're a sweaty gal, apply again in the morning as well!

Mally Beauty Instant Impact Mascara Review

Mascaras are some of my favorite beauty products to play around with.  Mascara, I feel,  is a super important beauty step to have every day, and as a glasses wearer I find it even more important to make my eyes pop.
I received this Mally Beauty Instant Impact Mascara in a Mally kit I ordered around January.  I hadn't gotten around to testing it until recently.  I'm usually a one or two mascara at a time kind of gal.  I'm very adamant about only using mascaras for 2-3 months due to super sensitive eyes.

This Mally mascara retails for about $20 on Amazon, Mallybeauty.com and QVC.com.

Product Description:

NEW Instant Impact Mascara takes lashes to great lengths with a six-ball applicator that distributes mascara evenly to each lash--every one of them will look longer and fuller than ever before!

I don't think I've ever used a mascara with this type of brush before.  I have to say I really like it.  Even when I run out of this mascara, I think I will wash and save the brush.  It really helps separate and curl the lashes.

Before pics:

As you can see in my before pics, I have lashes that naturally curl upwards, but are super light.

After pics:

This mascara helps add definition and curl without adding bulk which I am a HUGE fan of.

Pros:

*Love the brush to separate and curl
*Not a goopy formula- no spider lashes!
*Super black mascara to help eyes pop beneath glasses
*Great curling and separating formula
*Mally is cruelty free

Cons:

*$20 is a lot for a mascara
*Takes a while to dry- I wore this the other day and sneezed about 5 minutes after I applied this and I still got the lashes marks above and below my eyes.
*Not easily available
*Nothing SO spectacular to justify the price

Would I repurchase?: While I LOVE Mally and I do enjoy this mascara, I don't see anything SO amazing about it to justify spending so much on it.  I have yet to use a higher end mascara that makes me want to abandon my drugstore mascaras.

The Importance of a Primer

As the weather starts to get very hot and muggy here in New York, I realize how much I rely on my facial primer to help keep my makeup in place.  When I first started getting really into makeup, I read so much about facial primers and the importance of them.  I experimented with a few early on and have narrowed down my two favorites to The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Boost and Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.

If you don't normally wear or a primer or never have worn a primer there are several reasons why you should be!:

* Helps your makeup stay put longer- Primers act as a barrier in between the skin and foundation and it helps prevent the makeup from disappearing into your skin or allowing the natural oils from your skin to oxidize with the foundation.

*Helps Smooth your Skin For Foundation Application- Again, since the primer acts as a barrier between the skin and foundation, foundation doesn't get a chance to settle into pores and fine lines.  Instead it remains on top of the skin which leads to a smoother appearance.

*Tinted Primers Help Conceal Skin Before Foundation Even Goes On- If you have severely red skin, applying a green tinted primer can help counteract redness.  If you are going for a super tan look, try using a bronze tinted primer.  Primers can help out in whatever skin tone you are trying to achieve.

*Primers Help Conceal Dry Spots- I have super dry skin and by applying an emolient primer it helps conceal some of the flaky spots on my face.

Primers are one of my favorite makeup products to have.  It is one of the few steps of makeup that I can not live with out.

Do you use a primer? Which one is your favorite?

Get Your Bronze On- St. Tropez Review

I am PALE.  I mean glow in the dark, ghostly, freckles, people think I'm Irish pale.  It is very difficult for me to get a tan and I burn very easily so I usually slather up in sunscreen anyway.  I've tried the gradual self tanners with some success, but I've been dying to try the St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse that I so frequently hear about.

I purchased the mousse and the application mitt quite a while ago, but I haven't used it until recently as the weather has required skimpy dresses and tanks.

This is the most I've ever spent on a self-tanner and I HATE to say it- but it is so worth it!  The application is a breeze (check on Youtube or the St. Tropez website for how to videos) with the mitt but I would definitely recommend having someone around to help you bronze your back.  The most important thing to remember is to cover every inch you want tanned.  It doesn't matter if you rub too much product on a single area, it will blend, but you have to cover every area or that area won't bronze.    This is easy to do since the mousse itself is nicely bronzed!

I recommend starting at the bottom and working your way up, that way you won't have creases in your belly or anything when you bend over to apply the mousse to your legs.  I used the makeup sponge method to apply the mousse to my face.  I've tried this three times and have not had issues with this breaking me out.

I would say this lasts for about 4-5 days with daily shaving and loofahing.

Ok here's the scary before pics!!

Seriously, how unattractive and terrifying do my legs look in this pic? haha

..And the glorious after pics!!

I am SUPER impressed with the results.  I recently ordered Million Dollar Tan from Hautelook, which is organic, so I can't wait to see how it compares, but in the meantime I feel that this self-tanner is well worth the money and will save a lot of future wrinkles.

Beauty Bloggers Take New Jersey!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the day with two of my favorite beauty gals, Vanessa, of Vans Makeup Ride (don't worry I'm working on getting her blogging again :) and Tammy of Not A Rich Girl.

Vanessa and her husband planned a weekend trip to NYC from Texas and Tammy planned a beautiful day of shopping and dining in Hoboken.  Needless to say, we all spent an insane amount of money and will not need skin care products for QUITE a while!

My beautiful girls <3 p="">

Vanessa gave me such a beautiful gift!  She didn't have to do it and my absolute favorite part is the sign.  It says:  Good Friends Are Like Stars, You Don't Always Have To See Them To Know That They Are There.

How beautiful is that?!!  She also got me a personalized little makeup bag, an earrings and necklace set (can't wait to rock this), moisturizing socks and a green tea herbal soap bar.  I'm hoping to squeeze all of my purse makeup into the Melissa pouch because it's so darn cute!

After we had an awesome lunch at a Cuban restaurant in Hoboken, we went to Ricky's.  Some of the items in Ricky's are overpriced, but they have a lot of items that aren't frequently found in other stores.  I'd rather spend a few more bucks and get the product right away then pay shipping and wait a few days.  I only got two items:
Alba Botanica Very Emolient Cream Shave in Aloe Mint
Ben Nye Banana Luxury Powder

Ok, who HASN'T heard about this Ben Nye powder?  Almost every popular beauty vlogger uses this to brighten up the under eye area.  I can't wait to try it out.  I knew I would never use all of this damn product, so we bought jars and Vanessa's hubby sat in the corner of Ulta and separated the product into jars for us haha.

After Hoboken, Tammy drove us to this little Korea-town by her to check out her favorite Asian beauty stores.  Tammy was the first one to introduce me to sheet masks and a lot of the Asian skin care products, so I was super excited to be able to shop for my own!

First, we stopped at The Face Shop.  I really liked this store, it reminded me of a yoga studio inside- very calm and mellow.  The packaging on all of the products were so cute and they have products and ingredients that I have never heard of before.

I picked up:

-Real Nature Mask Mung Bean Sheet Mask
-Real Nature Mask Lemon Sheet Mask
-White Mud Nose Pack (like Biore strips in a mud form)
-Post-Acne Nighttime Spot Eraser (the number one product I wanted to try from here!)
-Raspberry Roots Collagen Eye Patch (I'm going to throw these in the fridge for an extra tightening effect)

The prices on these products were fantastic, very comparable to drugstore skin care prices and they threw in so many samples!  What beauty gal doesn't love to play around with samples?

Next, we went to Nature Republic.  I think this was my favorite store of the day.  Again, the decor was tranquil and serene and the prices were so fantastic!  I wish American drugstores would look at all of the innovative Asian skincare products and the beautiful packaging.  The only downside of this store was the saleswoman silently followed us all around the store.  We weren't stealing!
The products I bought were:

-By Flower Oil Control Mist (I'm normally very dry, but I get GREAZY during the summer.  Definitely going to carry this around in my purse)
-Fresh Deodorant Tissues (How brills are these? Going to probably leave them in my car)
-Fruits Waltz Color Nail Remover (I had to ask the SA to make sure this was POLISH remover lol)
-Control Film (Tammy said film worked better than blotting sheets on her during the summer, so it was worth a shot!)
-Snail Therapy 10,000 Hydrogel Eye Patch (Love the looks of these! Definitely going to pop these in the fridge as well for an extra tightening effect)
-Blackhead Brake Clear Nose Patch

And again- how awesome are the samples?!

Next stop on the Tammy express was Mitsuwa.  I have been reading about Mitsuwa since I began reading beauty blogs.  It's a huge Asian supermarket with an awesome food court as well.  A lot of Asian beauty brands are sold here so we knew we had to hit it up.  After grabbing a free sample of food, we headed to the beauty aisles.  I didn't pick up nearly as much as I thought.  I was looking for the Lucido L curling lotion, but no such luck!  Instead I got:

-Fresh Green Tee Hand Mask
-Healthy Peppermint Foot Mask
-Bobby Pins (Tammy says they are amazing and I love the container!)
-Care & Style Wave Hair Milk
-Strawberry Gummy Candy
-Hello Panda Snacks

I hope the wave hair milk works in my hair.  It's one of the products I'm most excited to test out!

Finally, our last stop was Ulta.  I've only been to Ulta one or two times, but I knew I didn't want to purchase any premium brands there because I'll miss out on the points from Sephora haha.  I did pick up a few things though that aren't readily available by me:

-Badger Balm Headache Soother (Tammy recommended this because it helps soothe her migraines. I will try anything that helps!)
-Hawaiian Tropic Hydration After Sun Lotion
-Eco Tools Retractable Kabuki (my first Ecotools brush!)
-Batiste Dry Shampoo (LOVE the packaging!)
-Prestige Biggest Lashes Mascara (I LOVED this when Tammy sent it to me)
-Prestige Blackest Lashes Mascara

All in all, it was a beautiful day (not so beautiful for my wallet!) and I'm so grateful for the blogosphere because it brought two such amazing women into my life.  Thank you Tammy for taking us around and planning such a beautiful day and thank you Vanessa for making the trip and cutting some time out of your short weekend here to spend with us! Love you gals!
