Tip Thursday: Stinky Feet Edition

I love wearing flats.  It's what I wear to work a large majority of the time for their form, function and style.  A big downside to wearing flats though, is that they can STINK!  Don't judge me, you know it happens to you as well.  If your flats are a little less than fresh when you get home, simply put two used or unused scented dryer sheets in them.  By the time you wake up the next day the odors will be long gone!

January Favorites

January was an INCREDIBLY busy month for me.  Between New Years, my birthday, tons of friends birthdays and a lot of work, I was a very busy but very happy girl in the month of January.  I didn't have a whole lot of time to try new products, but I did discover a few gems and also rediscovered some old products in new ways.

ELF Small Stipple Brush and Wet n Wild Mega Glo in Blushing-  I have had this creamy pink highlighter for quite a few years.  I go through phases where I use it every day and then won't use it for months.  When I began using this with my small stipple brush from ELF it was like love at first sight! This brush provides the perfect amount of product to highlight my cheekbones and the frosty pink color is perfect for my super fair skin.

Mally BeautyUnder Eye Brightener
- I purchased this in my Mally Makeover Kit and it really is fabulous.  When I first used it I was a bit surprised to see how yellow it is, but the brightening effect it has under my eyes is just amazing.  Review is on it's way!

Eyebrow Razor
- I bought a pack of three of these razors from my dollar store a few months ago.  I didn't really use it until I saw this video from April.  I used it on my brows that day and I LOVED it.  It's really great if you have a lot of peach fuzz around your brow area.

The Body Shop Coconut Lip Butter
- It's strange, I do not like the taste of coconut, but am very obsessed with the smell of it.  This lip butter sort of reminds me of the Nivea creme in terms of it's texture.  It's very lotion like and in all honesty, wears off your lips pretty quickly, but the smell and texture on my lips is just too divine.

Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream with The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Boost-  For my birthday a few weeks ago I got my makeup done at my local Sephora (didn't love it).  I noticed that the MUA mixed a BB cream with a primer.  She says this made the ultimate primer.  I had to go home and try this with my own BB cream and primer and I really like it!  It helps to provide a great base layer for my foundation to go on and I feel like I am getting the benefits of wearing a BB cream daily.

Favorite Youtube Video of the Month

This is the simplest hair tutorial, yet I am amazed by it!  I always try to recreate this look and the bobby pins just never stay properly.  This is such a great idea!

Favorite Blog of the Month

I've been really obsessed with fitness tumblers this past month and Funeral For My Fat is one of my favorites.  It's very inspirational and informative at the same time.

Favorite Book of the Month

I am such a Harry Potter nerd, but I can't really call myself a Harry Potter nerd without ever having read the books! I started reading the books in December, and I just recently finished The Prisoner of Azkaban, and it's definitely my favorite to date!

Fitspiration: Gold's Gym Dance Workout for Wii Review

As stated in my previous fitspiration posts, I prefer to work out at home.  I'm more comfortable and there is really no excuse for me NOT to work out when I work out at home.  For Christmas, my dad got me a game for my Wii called Gold's Gym Dance Workout.  I loved my Wii Zumba game so much, that I thought this would definitely be worth a shot!

Product description from Amazon:

Gold's Gym Dance Workout is a unique dance/workout game for Wii that challenges and engages players like no game before it. The first dance game specifically dedicated to fitness and weight loss, it utilizes a blend of workout and in-game instructor customization, comically engaging mini-games, Wii Balance Board integration, a sizable song list to workout to and in-game progress tracking that together allows players to dance their way to fitness without them even knowing it. Additional features include 2-player game support, a complementary 7-day Gold's Gym membership and more.

This game combines dancing and kickboxing moves to provide a pretty decent cardio workout (especially for beginners like me).  What I really like about this game is that you need to provide some basic info including weight and height and the game provides a calorie count on the screen.  Who knows how accurate this is, but at least it will give you an idea!

This game is not one continuous workout like the Zumba game is, but sets of mini workouts that you can either pre-select in a routine or create your own routine with.  I like this in a way, because it's not as monotonous.

Screenshot of one of the mini kickboxing routines

Screen shot of where the calorie counter is located

♥ Calorie count onscreen
♥ Can create endless routines
♥ Pretty good cardio workout
♥ Keeps routines fresh and new
♥ Very affordable
♥ Good music
♥ It's actually fun
♥ Can play with 2 players

-Pretty weak graphics
-There is a 30-45 second pause between each routine, which kind of sucks
-It can be a bit confusing to set up at first
-May be hard to find in store..had to buy it used
-No toning or body weight routines

Who is this good for?
*People who like to work out at home
*Girls who crave cardio
*Beginner-moderate exercisers
*Those who enjoy Zumba

Review: Beauty Addicts Show Off Mascara

It's been quite a few months since I've received any subscription boxes, but I did have some products from my Glossyboxes that I haven't used yet.  One of these items is Show Off Mascara by Beauty Addicts.  I have extremely sensitive eyes, so I am one of those people who actually abides by the three month mascara expiration rule.  This means I normally only have one mascara open and started at a time.  This explains why I didn't get to this mascara until now.

This Show Off Mascara is available at for $20.  The website description states:
Intense, dramatic lashes with one easy stroke! This unique formula offers volume, length and curl with Argan Oil to condition and protect. The curved brush hugs the natural eye shape to coat every lash while fanning and feathering. No clumps, no flakes, no smudges!

As you can see from the packaging, this is a messy mascara.  It's very wet and goopy.  That being said it is also SUPER black which I love.  This mascara is really great for lengthening and opening up the eye area.  I even think it curls my lashes nicely (all pics were taken with out prior lash curling).  It's somewhat volumizing, but I really enjoy using this mascara and dragging the outer lashes out even further to give a cat eye like appearance.

I really love the brush from this mascara.  It has a slight curve which makes it easy to apply at the base of the lashes and I guess is what helps curl my lashes so well.  However, the top of the wand collects a lot of product and needs to be wiped several times before applying to the eye area.

♥ Super black
♥ Very lengthening
♥ Helps elongate the eye
♥ Contains argan oil
♥ Great brush
♥ Curls lashes

-Can be messy
-Easily clumps
-A bit pricey ($20)
-Can be difficult to find

Would I repurchase?: While I did enjoy this mascara, there are too many cons to this mascara for it to cost $20.

Week in Pictures: Birthday Week

::Personal Post::

So I am now 28 years old.  Or as I like to say..celebrating the 8th anniversary of my 21st birthday.  I had a very busy week and was spoiled rotten by some of my favorite people (as seen here.)

*Last week my friend Bernadette and I went to the Melting Pot.  Her birthday was earlier in January so we decided to celebrate our birthdays together at a lovely dinner.  Bernie had never been to the Melting Pot, because she's not really a fan of cheese.  I convinced her that she would love the spinach artichoke dip and the rest of the courses didn't involve cheese.  Needless to say, she was hooked!

I don't know why I look like I'm asleep in this picture, but I had to show off this blazer! I bought it on clearance from H&M and think it's super fabulous!
My layering tank is form Target, jeans from Gap and shoes from Coach :)

My lovely date and I enjoying our birthday chocolate!

Tuesday was my actual birthday and some of my coworkers spoiled me rotten! I suffered such an insane sugar high, proceeded by a massive crash! SO worth it.

My "brother" Anthony and I..I always make him sing a duet with me and this year we did "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

And then my two best friends always sing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and something highly inappropriate always follows haha

My silver dress is from Marshalls and my purple jewelry is from Charming Charlie

Let's hope 28 is my year!!

All in all, I had a great 28th birthday and hopefully "28" and 2013 will be my year!

Tip Thursday: Carrie Bradshaw Wouldn't Approve

Is anyone else as big of a Sex and the City fan as I am? I LOVED everything about the show (with the exception of the second movie).  One of my favorite quotes is to do with scrunchies.  In an argument with that jerk Berger Carrie states: "No woman who works at W Magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie."
I couldn't agree more with Carrie. I feel like scrunchies are reserved for the gym or a spa day.  There is one time I think a scrunchie is totally appropriate and that's at night.
I use a soft scrunchie to put my hair up in a super high pony tail to go to sleep.  I do this for two reasons:
1.  It helps provide some volume
2. It helps keep my hair clean longer since it's not pressed up against my lotioned face.

Make sure it's a lose and soft scrunchie so you won't get any dent marks!

Golden Globes 2013 Trend Report: Beauty Edition

My co-workers and I are still talking constantly about the Golden Globes and all of the fabulous dresses.  The dresses weren't the only trends I was paying attention to, I was also obsessed with quite a few of the stunning beauty looks the starlets were rocking.  Here are some of my favorite Golden Globes beauty trends that we could all wear!

♥ The Messy Fishtail Braid
I know my loves on Fashion Police said they were over the fishtail trend, but I think the simple braid is stunning and very youthful.  I think it looks beautiful on Lucy Liu, although I would have liked to see it messed up a little bit more.

♥ Undone Waves
The trend of undone waves or super loose curls is not going anywhere! These waves are super easy to do at home and can be worn with a casual ensemble or a super fancy dress a la Amanda.

♥ Matching your lips to your outfit
Jessica Alba was one of my best dressed ladies and I love how her lips match her ensemble.  I usually see this as a no-no, but with coral it works.

♥ Blunt Bangs
Isn't Kerry Washington just amazingly stunning?  Her blunt, yet shaggy, bangs are just amazing!  I see a lot of people rocking this trend come spring and summer.  I wish my hair wasn't as stubborn as it is so I could attempt these bangs as well.

♥ The Gym Bun
When Katharine McPhee walked onto the red carpet I was so excited to see her hair.  I rock this undone bone at least once a week and I always feel a bit on the bummy side when I do.  When I see McPhee rocking it with a bit of undone volume at the front I felt justified in taking the easy way out with my hair every once in a while.

♥ Kohl Rimmed Eyes
Not many people can get away with lining the inner rim of their eyes all the way around, but McPhee makes it work.  Keep the rest of your makeup simple and use a kohl liner to ensure a smoldering look.

What were your favorite beauty trends of the evening?

Golden Globes 2013: Fashion Trend Report

I just love watching all of the awards shows and red carpets.  Of course, I do love my movies and television shows so I do care about the awards, but I just LOVE the fashion.  My favorite part of any major awards show is to watch Joan Rivers tear people apart the day after on Fashion Police.

I was quite impressed by the fashion at last night's Golden Globes Awards.  There was only one dress I was a bit ehhh on, but for the most part I really liked everyones' looks. There were so many trends on the carpet, that I feel like we can incorporate into our daily fashion lives.  Here are some of my favorite trends:

Red Belted Dress

I'm obsessed with Jennifer Lawrence, but I wasn't a huge fan of this dress on her.  Something about the boob part of the dress just didn't sit well with me.  However, I did love the look of a red belted dress on her.  This is a trend I think I will definitely be rocking come spring and summer.

Mint Green Anything!

I'm a big Jessica Chastain fan, but this dress was a miss for me.  I just don't think it did anything for her.  I did however, LOVE the soft mint green color.  This is a color that I think is here to stay!

Ornate Black and Gold

Kate Hudson looked simply stunning in this ornate, yet simple, black and gold number.  I was never a gold fan but it has been growing on me and this dress turned me into an all out fan!  Kate was my best dressed of the evening and I think there will be touches of black and gold everywhere after stores see this dress!

Sheer Over Solid

Isn't Kerry Washington just ridiculously stunning?  I really loved this dress and I loved the nude color on her skin tone.  The part of this dress that surprised me though, was the long sheer skirt over the short solid skirt.  I really thought that was a trend of last summer, but if Kerry is still wearing it, than I think everyone should still wear it!

Who was your best dressed of the night?  Do you like or dislike any of these trends?

Review: Lush Big Shampoo

I know I've sang the praises of Lush's Big Shampoo before, but I've never done a proper review.  Big Shampoo has quickly become not only one of my favorite hair products, but one of my favorite products in my beauty arsenal.

As I've previously blogged about, my hair can sometimes a get an oily/gummy feeling in the crown area.  I've tried a lot of clarifying shampoos but none of them have ever done the job consistently.  I don't usually spend a lot of money on hair products, but after reading and seeing so many rave reviews about this product, I thought it would be worth a shot.

Product Info:

*Big Shampoo is available at your local Lush location or  It's $26.95 for 11.4 oz.

*Website description:
Give limp hair more volume than you thought possible with seaweed infusion to soften hair, and fresh citrus juices for incredible shine. Made with over 50% sea salt, BIG is our most effective shampoo for hair in need of a boost to turn it into sexy, bouncing hair. Full of minerals, sea salt de-greases hair, removing dead skin cells and dirt, without stripping natural oils. The lift comes from debris being lifted from the roots of the hair for major oomph. Plus, we’ve mixed in extra virgin coconut oil, and avocado butter for added softness. Your hair will be bouncing back to life.

*Product Description on Package:

As you can see by the picture of the product itself, this shampoo is unlike any you've probably seen before.  It appears to be a standard looking shampoo but with the grainy texture of sea salt!  The product smells very clean and a bit earthy.  The scent is not overpowering and doesn't remain on your hair after you rinse it out.

♥ Super effective for getting the "gunk" out of your hair
♥ Very cleansing
♥ Very gentle and safe for colored or treated hair
♥ Great for dandruff sufferers
♥ Promotes a healthy scalp and hair growth
♥ Very natural
♥ I actually love the tub like packaging

-A bit pricey for shampoo
-Can be too cleansing/drying
-Your hair needs to be super wet and saturated or you will still feel grains in your hair
-You need to use a bit more than your standard shampoo
-Doesn't provide any extra volume like it states (however my hair is EXTREMELY heavy)

♥ Make your hair is super wet and saturated before using this shampoo
♥ Use with a deep conditioner or heavy conditioner
♥ Concentrate soley on the roots- it's too drying for the  ends!
♥ Massage into your scalp with your fingertips for at least a minute
♥ Don't let water get into the tub

♥ Would I repurchase: Absolutely!

What is your favorite Lush product?  Have you ever tried Big Shampoo?

Tip Thursday: Heat it up

Vitamin E oil is one of my favorite nail/cuticle treatments.  It's very affordable and super effective and moisturizing.  During the winter I like to pop a teaspoon of my vitamin e oil in the microwave for about 15 seconds to heat it and the heat it helps it penetrate the cuticles and skin even more.  I've been doing this about 3 times a week and have noticed a significant improvement in my super dry cuticles.

Don't judge my filthy microwave lol

Recent Empties

These are my empties from the past month or so.  Some of these babies are absolute repurchases and some of them are complete duds.  Keep reading to find out which products are worth the cash.

*Kirkland Daily Facial Cleansing Towelettes- I love these facial cleansing wipes.  They are great for my super sensitive skin and they do a great job of removing even the most stubborn waterproof makeup.  It's great how super affordable they are, but I am kind of dying to try the Yes to Carrots/ Blueberries brand towelettes so I'm not sure if I am going to repurchase these yet.

*Vitafusion Women's Multivitamin Gummy Vitamins- I LOVE these vitamins.  The fact that they are in gummy form makes me excited to take them and makes me remember to take them in the first place.  They contained biotin and I didn't think they were doing anything for my nails until I ran out and stopped taking them.  My nails look horrible now and have been falling apart constantly.  Need to get me some more!

*Got2b Encore Fresh Dry Shampoo- Ok, I loved this dry shampoo! It worked beautifully at absorbing oil and gave my hair some nice volume.  The downside? It literally lasted me 4 applications! I don't apply a whole lot of this so there's no way it should have only lasted 4 applications.  I definitely will not be repurchasing this.

*Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector- I actually finished this before my previous empties post, but totally forgot to include it.  This is a pricey item but I actually had good luck with this in lightening some of my acne scars.  I repurchased this and my skin freaked out massively shortly after using my second bottle.  I also started using a new moisturizer at the same time, so I'm going to try to use this product again and hope my skin won't freak out.

*Secret Outlast Completely Clean Antiperspirant- I've made it no secret that I'm a sweaty gal.  This deodorant really helped cut down on my sweatiness, but then I swear my skin got used it to it and it wasn't as effective.  I want to try a different antiperspirant before repurchasing this one to see if a new one will be more effective.

*Philosophy Full of Promise Moisturizer- I only had a sample of this product but I really loved it.  I am thinking of purchasing a full size of this for my birthday since my skin has been going haywire.

*Penn State Hand Sanitizer- Yes, that is how obsessed I am with my college.  I purchased and used Penn State sanitizer.

*Almay Intense I-Color Eyeliner in Raisin Quartz- I LOVE this eyeliner.  I can't believe how long I've had this.  It is the perfect everyday neutral eyeliner and it glides on like a dream.  I believe this product has been discontinued so I have to visit my CVS and find out if Almay has an alternative.

*Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster- I love this product! I received this in either a Beauty Tube or a Glossybox (or possibly both) and this made my skin feel like a dream.  I applied this right before my moisturizer and I felt like it really helped my moisturizer sink in better.  I have another bottle of this, but depending on the results from my Clinique serum I may repurchase this one.

*Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara- I received this in a Beauty Tube and I had really high hopes for it based on all of the raves I've heard on Youtube and truth be told I just found it ok.  I didn't find it better than any of my favorite drugstore mascaras and didn't find it worth the money.  This will not be a repurchase for me.

*MM Mascara- This I received in a make up gift set from Kohls.  It had very little product in it, but it did lengthen my lashes quite nicely.  I have very skinny lashes though, so long, thin lashes was not the look I was going for.

*Clinique High Impact Mascara- Out of the three mascaras mentioned in this post, this one was my favorite.  It thickened nicely and lengthened.  I enjoyed it a lot, but again, I don't find mascara something necessary to spend a lot of money on so I will not be repurchasing this product.

Have you tried any of these products recently?  Am I the only one who takes an extremely long time to finish things haha?

DIY: Fitness Contract

January is of course the time for people to make resolutions that will most likely not last them until the middle of the month.  Why do we continually set ourselves up for failure?  I always start out saying I'm going to eat salad 24/7 and work out an hour each day.  Who am I kidding??  Of course my resolutions are broken by my birthday, they are too drastic of changes to make so suddenly!

This gave me an idea. Both myself and my friend Danielle have been complaining about putting on some extra pounds lately.  I decided we should make a fitness contract to keep us on our health game!

google images

Here's some tips, tricks and steps to making a fitness contract.

Step 1: Determine who will be your health buddy

When picking the friend or friends you want to have the contract with, there are certain things to take into consideration.
*Is this a friend who you will be actually exercising with or just checking in with?
*Is this a person with similar goals as you? It will be difficult to have a contract with a friend who wants to lose 50 pounds when you only want to lose 10.
*Do they have similar health habits as you? If you make a fitness contract with someone who already works out every day for an hour, you will probably get discouraged by their progress and the lack of your progress.
*Find someone who's honest! If you are not working out with them, you need them to be honest just like you will be honest with them.

Step 2: Make an overall goal
*Make this goal realistic, but what you would ultimately want as your health goal
*Keep in mind, the overall goal is most likely a LONG TERM won't be reached in a month

Step 3: Pick a weekly goal for each participant in the contract
*Make the goal realistic
*Fot ultimate results make a fitness and nutrition goal
*Start small, the best contracts are updated constantly so make the goal small and attainable to get a sense of accomplishment

Step 4: Create a rewards system!
*Do not reward yourself with food!
*Pick how often you will reward yourself
*Make the reward something you don't usually buy yourself/ do for yourself

Step 5: Create an accountability system
*Decide whether you are going to work out with your friend, text your friend, etc. about your workouts and progress
*If you don't meet your weekly goal, make some kind of "punishment" system

Step 6: Keep track!
*Write down your workouts, your healthy meals, etc.- you need to keep track of your time!
*Keep one day a week to weigh yourself AND measure yourself- remember you don't always see changes on the scale, but you may see and feel changes in terms of your measurements

Step 7: Have fun and allow for failures!
Look, life gets in the way sometimes.  You won't always meet your goals and that's ok.  Don't beat yourself up and start back up right again.  Also, find a workout routine and eating routine that doesn't make you miserable.  This isn't about short term changes, this is how we are building long term habits!

A sneak into my fitness contract (yes that's my chicken scratch!)

I did this contract with my friend Danielle.  We decided on a weekly goal of 150 minutes of working out (this includes cardio, weight training, pilates, etc.) and 3 healthy lunches per week (we are both teaching assistants).  We both have different schedules so we check in with each other via text.

My overall goal is to get down to 117 pounds which is my "normal" weight.  When I started the contract I was at 130.  13 pounds seemed like a big goal for a month to two month span, so I made my immediate goal 125 pounds.  I'd also like to be able to hold a plank for 2 minutes.

Our rewards system is to put away $5 each week we meet our goal.  When we reach $100 we will treat ourselves to a spa day.  If we don't reach our weekly goal we have to pay the other person $1.  I'm also thinking of treating myself to a Blogilates workout top when I reach 125 pounds.

So this is just a silly way for me to try to get myself into some positive health habits.  I need a sense of accountability and a rewards system to really feel motivated so I'm glad Danielle and I did this.  We are going to meet up again in the beginning of February to see if we have to alter or add anything to the contract.

Please let me know if any of you do this or have done something similar to this?

Tip Thursday: Drink Up

I love hearing fitness and nutrition tips.  As you are well aware, I am a fitness and nutrition newbie so any information I can gather to help me be a healthier me-I am all for!  I was talking with a coworker a few weeks ago about dieting and eating healthy and such.  She was telling me about the success she had with Weight Watchers and shared with me one of her favorite tips.

In between bites of your meal, put your fork down, chew fully and take a sip of water.  Do this between every single bite of your meal!  This basically helps you slow down your eating and gives your stomach time to signal to your brain that you are full.  I've tried this with several meals lately and whether it's a physical thing, psychological thing, or a combination of the both- it works!
